    Dentist Near North Star, DE

If you live in North Star, Gawlas Family Dental is about fifteen minutes away at 25 Milltown Road in Wilmington. We are a family-owned general practice, and the same office handles cleanings, fillings and crowns, cosmetic work, and problems that will not wait until next month.

North Star is one of those Delaware places that is easy to live in and hard to explain. It is a census-designated place of roughly 8,000 people spread across about seven square miles of subdivisions between Pike Creek and Hockessin, with no town line, no municipal government, and no main street. The mail goes out with Hockessin or Newark on it. Most residents just name their road.

That road is usually North Star Road, and it is where the drive to our office starts.

The Same Building, the Same Team, for Four Decades

Gawlas Family Dental has served patients under its current ownership since 2021, when Dr. Matthew Gawlas purchased the practice from Dr. Todd Rowen. Dr. Rowen had already spent approximately 40 years caring for patients at this location, and nearly the entire team remained with the practice through the transition.

That continuity matters to patients who want to know the people providing their care. Dr. Gawlas has family ties to the area and is raising four children close to their grandparents.

Many of our patients want an independent dental practice where decisions about care are made by their dentist rather than a large corporate chain. Gawlas Family Dental is a member of the Independent Dental Society of Delaware, a group of independent dentists working to keep quality dental care accessible and affordable.

North Star is spread out enough that any appointment is a deliberate trip, which is a good argument for an office that can do the checkup, the crown, and the emergency without sending you somewhere else.

    The Drive From North Star

    Gawlas Family Dental
    25 Milltown Road
    Wilmington, DE 19808

The usual way — about fifteen minutes: take North Star Road south to Paper Mill Road, follow Paper Mill east to Limestone Road (Route 7), then go south on Limestone about two and a half miles to Milltown Road. Turn east on Milltown and stay on it for roughly a mile and a half; the office is near the far end, close to where Milltown meets Newport Gap Pike.

The northern option: from the upper end of North Star, Little Baltimore Road connects to Brackenville Road, which reaches Lancaster Pike. From there Newport Gap Pike (Route 41) runs south and brings you to the other end of Milltown Road. It is a slightly longer loop and it keeps you off Limestone Road entirely.

Timing: Limestone Road is the bottleneck on this drive — it slows at the Milltown Road and Kirkwood Highway signals during rush hour — and Paper Mill Road picks up traffic around school start and dismissal. A midday appointment sidesteps both. We are open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Free on-site parking with handicap-accessible spaces.

What Makes North Star Its Own Place

North Star is residential nearly the whole way through. Errands mean turning onto Limestone Road; the two landmarks most often associated with the area are Woodside Farm Creamery on North Star Road and the Chinese American Community Center over on Little Baltimore Road, both of which carry Hockessin mailing addresses even though they sit squarely in North Star.

The quirk longtime residents mention most is the school district line. North Star is split down the middle: half of it belongs to Red Clay, where children attend North Star Elementary on Little Baltimore Road and Henry B. duPont Middle School, and half belongs to Christina, where they go to Maclary Elementary, Shue-Medill Middle School, and Newark High School. Neighbors a few streets apart can be in entirely different districts.

The demographics shape what we see clinically. The median age in North Star is just over fifty, and more than three quarters of households are married couples — a settled, long-tenured population. That translates into a lot of adults who have had dental work for thirty or forty years and now need it evaluated, replaced, or maintained, alongside their kids and, increasingly, their parents. Having all of that under one roof, with a team that has been in the same building since before some of those restorations were placed, is the practical reason most North Star patients end up here.

Dental Care for Patients Without Insurance

Gawlas Family Dental offers the Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan for qualifying patients without dental insurance. The plan provides included preventive services and reduced fees on additional eligible care for an annual membership fee.

Smile 365 is a dental discount plan rather than insurance. There are no yearly maximums, deductibles, claim forms, preauthorizations, preexisting-condition limitations, or waiting periods. Please review current plan terms and eligibility with our office before enrolling.

We currently accept Aetna Extend, United Concordia, and Delaware Children’s Medicaid, along with all standard forms of payment. Because insurance participation can change, contact the office to confirm current acceptance and coverage before scheduling treatment.

    Frequently Asked Questions

My address says Hockessin or Newark. Am I still in your area?

Yes. North Star is a census area rather than a postal one, so addresses inside it are written as Hockessin or Newark. Whatever your mail says, the office is a straightforward drive down Limestone Road and east on Milltown Road.

How long does the drive take from North Star?

Around fifteen minutes without heavy traffic. North Star Road to Paper Mill Road, east to Limestone Road, south to Milltown Road, then east on Milltown to the office.

Is there a way around Limestone Road?

There is. From the northern part of North Star, Little Baltimore Road to Brackenville Road puts you on Lancaster Pike, and Newport Gap Pike runs south from there to Milltown Road. It adds a little distance but avoids the Limestone Road signals.

Can the whole household be seen at one office?

Yes. We treat children, adults, and older patients, which matters in an area where a lot of households have school-age kids and aging parents on the schedule in the same season.

Is parking available at the dental office?

Yes. Gawlas Family Dental has a free on-site parking lot for patients, including handicap-accessible parking.

Can I call the office for a dental emergency?

Yes. Call the office immediately if you are experiencing a dental emergency. We try to reserve room in our schedule for urgent needs and will make every reasonable effort to see you as soon as possible.

Does Gawlas Family Dental offer a membership plan?

Yes. The Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan helps qualifying patients without dental insurance receive included preventive care and save on additional eligible services. Contact the office for current pricing and complete plan terms.
