Dentist Near New Castle, DE
Gawlas Family Dental is a family-owned practice at 25 Milltown Road, on the western edge of Wilmington in the 19808 ZIP code. From New Castle it is about seven and a half miles by way of Route 141, or somewhere near 20 minutes.
New Castle is not a suburb of anywhere. It is a river town with a colonial core — brick sidewalks and cobblestone, The Green, the 1732 court house that served as Delaware’s first state capitol, the Read House and the Amstel House, Battery Park along the water. Almost everything outside that core is reached by heading away from the river, northwest up Basin Road and around the outside of Wilmington. Our office sits near the far end of that arc.
So this is a deliberate drive, and we would rather present it that way than dress it up. What is on the other end is general, cosmetic, restorative, preventive, and emergency dentistry for every age, in a building the same practice has occupied for roughly forty years.
A Family-Owned Office Worth the Trip From New Castle
Gawlas Family Dental has served patients under its current ownership since 2021, when Dr. Matthew Gawlas purchased the practice from Dr. Todd Rowen. Dr. Rowen had already spent approximately 40 years caring for patients at this location, and nearly the entire team remained with the practice through the transition.
That continuity matters to patients who want to know the people providing their care. Dr. Gawlas has family ties to the area and is raising four children close to their grandparents.
Many of our patients want an independent dental practice where decisions about care are made by their dentist rather than a large corporate chain. Gawlas Family Dental is a member of the Independent Dental Society of Delaware, a group of independent dentists working to keep quality dental care accessible and affordable.
Coming this far, it helps that a cleaning, a chipped front tooth, and a crown can all be handled here rather than split between two or three offices in different directions.

Directions From New Castle
Gawlas Family Dental
25 Milltown Road
Wilmington, DE 19808
Route 141 the whole way. Route 141 begins in New Castle, where Route 9 meets the eastern end of Route 273, and runs northwest as Basin Road — four lanes, divided, past the Wilmington Airport. Follow it to the Kirkwood Highway interchange at Prices Corner and come off heading west. Turn north onto Route 41, Newport Gap Pike, and Milltown Road is immediately on the left.
Coming out of the historic district. Delaware Street runs west out of the old town and becomes Route 9 and Route 273, both of which reach the foot of Route 141 in a few minutes. You do not need to loop back to Route 13 first.
Skipping the interchange. Route 62 leaves Route 141 at an interchange in Belvedere and runs west as Boxwood Road, then Newport Gap Pike, ending at Kirkwood Highway at the exact point where Route 41 begins. If the Route 141 interchange is stacked up, Boxwood Road drops you a block from Milltown Road instead.
Traffic. Route 141 is a commuter road and carries the weight of it morning and evening, with the Prices Corner end the slowest part. Our hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; a midday appointment usually means an easy drive both directions.
Free on-site parking with handicap-accessible spaces — no meters, no garage, no circling.
Who Drives Up From New Castle
The Basin Road corridor is really the spine of daily life in New Castle. Route 141 threads past the airport, and William Penn High School and New Castle Elementary School both sit on East Basin Road, in the Colonial School District. For a lot of families the road to our office is the same road they already drive twice a day for drop-off.
Beyond the historic district, patients come to us from Wilmington Manor and the neighborhoods spread along Route 9 and Route 273. Several work north or west of the city rather than in it, which puts them on this side of the county for much of the week anyway.
And some come because of what the practice is rather than where it is. New Castle residents looking specifically for an independently owned dental office — one not run by a corporate group — often have to look outside their own ZIP code to find one. If you have moved out to New Castle and would rather not change dentists, the drive is more manageable than the map makes it look.
Dental Care for Patients Without Insurance
Gawlas Family Dental offers the Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan for qualifying patients without dental insurance. The plan provides included preventive services and reduced fees on additional eligible care for an annual membership fee.
Smile 365 is a dental discount plan rather than insurance. There are no yearly maximums, deductibles, claim forms, preauthorizations, preexisting-condition limitations, or waiting periods. Please review current plan terms and eligibility with our office before enrolling.
We currently accept Aetna Extend, United Concordia, and Delaware Children’s Medicaid, along with all standard forms of payment. Because insurance participation can change, contact the office to confirm current acceptance and coverage before scheduling treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is the office from New Castle?
Roughly seven and a half miles, or about 20 minutes, using Route 141 north from New Castle to the Kirkwood Highway interchange at Prices Corner. We are at 25 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
Will I have to drive through downtown Wilmington?
No. Route 141 is a semicircular road that loops around the outside of Wilmington rather than through it, so the trip from New Castle never enters the city center.
Is it worth driving that far for a dental appointment?
That depends on what you want from a dentist. If you are content with whichever office is nearest, probably not. If you want an independent practice where your dentist owns the place, where the staff has largely been the same team for years, and where emergencies get fit into the schedule, patients from New Castle regularly decide it is.
Is parking available at the dental office?
Yes. Gawlas Family Dental has a free on-site parking lot for patients, including handicap-accessible parking.
Can I call the office for a dental emergency?
Yes. Call the office immediately if you are experiencing a dental emergency. We try to reserve room in our schedule for urgent needs and will make every reasonable effort to see you as soon as possible.
Does Gawlas Family Dental offer a membership plan?
Yes. The Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan helps qualifying patients without dental insurance receive included preventive care and save on additional eligible services. Contact the office for current pricing and complete plan terms.
