    Dentist Near Marshallton, DE

Marshallton is the old mill village on Red Clay Creek, settled around the mills that John Marshall bought in 1835 and named for him the following year. Gawlas Family Dental is under two miles away at 25 Milltown Road, sharing the same 19808 ZIP code, and provides general, cosmetic, restorative, preventive, and emergency dentistry.

Village life here runs along Old Capitol Trail — the stretch of the old road that was bypassed when the newer Capitol Trail bridge over the creek opened in 1940. It is a different kind of place from the shopping corridor a few blocks north, and people who live in it tend to notice that difference when they choose where to get their teeth cleaned.

Our practice is independently owned, not part of a chain, and it has been at one address long enough to have treated three generations of some families. That tends to sit well with a community that kept its mill, its church, and its blacksmith shop.

One Building, Two Dentists, Forty-Plus Years — A Marshallton Neighbor

Gawlas Family Dental has served patients under its current ownership since 2021, when Dr. Matthew Gawlas purchased the practice from Dr. Todd Rowen. Dr. Rowen had already spent approximately 40 years caring for patients at this location, and nearly the entire team remained with the practice through the transition.

That continuity matters to patients who want to know the people providing their care. Dr. Gawlas has family ties to the area and is raising four children close to their grandparents.

Many of our patients want an independent dental practice where decisions about care are made by their dentist rather than a large corporate chain. Gawlas Family Dental is a member of the Independent Dental Society of Delaware, a group of independent dentists working to keep quality dental care accessible and affordable.

Rather than sending you to a different address for each problem, we handle preventive visits, cosmetic work, repairs, and urgent care under one roof and one set of records.

The Drive From Marshallton to 25 Milltown Road

    Gawlas Family Dental
    25 Milltown Road
    Wilmington, DE 19808

Shortest route: follow Old Capitol Trail out to Kirkwood Highway, go a short way east, then turn north onto Duncan Road and follow it to Milltown Road. Turn toward Newport Gap Pike and we are along that block. About 1.8 miles in total — five or six minutes without delays.

The creek-side alternative: stay on Kirkwood Highway a little farther to Newport Gap Pike (Route 41), then head north. This carries you past the Greenbank area, where Greenbank Mill has stood on Greenbank Road since 1790, and the Wilmington & Western Railroad’s Greenbank Station sits on Newport Gap Pike. Turn onto Milltown Road at the top of that run.

Timing note: Duncan Road passes Brandywine Springs School, whose day runs 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., so build in a few minutes if you are travelling right at the start or end of it. Our own hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

If the trains are running: excursion weekends bring extra cars to the Greenbank end of Newport Gap Pike. The Duncan Road route sidesteps that entirely.

The office has a free lot on site, including handicap-accessible spaces.

Marshallton, Greenbank, and the Red Clay Valley

The households we see from Marshallton are often long-rooted ones. Some live in the older village housing built for mill workers when J. R. Bringhurst expanded the rolling mills in the 1870s; others are in the newer streets that filled in around the village after the fiber plants and the railroad era ended. In both cases we see a lot of families where the parents were patients here before the children were born.

The same holds for the neighboring pockets of the lower Red Clay valley — Greenbank, Kiamensi, and the streets between Old Capitol Trail and the creek. Geographically these sit closer to us than to almost any other general dental office, which is a simple, unglamorous reason people choose us.

A third group is made up of newer arrivals who came for the housing stock and the creek and then went looking for local services rather than corporate ones. We treat children, adults, and seniors, and we hold appointment room open for emergencies, which matters when the alternative is a drive well outside the valley.

Dental Care for Patients Without Insurance

Gawlas Family Dental offers the Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan for qualifying patients without dental insurance. The plan provides included preventive services and reduced fees on additional eligible care for an annual membership fee.

Smile 365 is a dental discount plan rather than insurance. There are no yearly maximums, deductibles, claim forms, preauthorizations, preexisting-condition limitations, or waiting periods. Please review current plan terms and eligibility with our office before enrolling.

We currently accept Aetna Extend, United Concordia, and Delaware Children’s Medicaid, along with all standard forms of payment. Because insurance participation can change, contact the office to confirm current acceptance and coverage before scheduling treatment.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Gawlas Family Dental from Marshallton?

Roughly 1.8 miles — five or six minutes in normal conditions. We are at 25 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, the same ZIP code Marshallton uses.

Which route keeps me off the busiest roads?

Duncan Road. Take Old Capitol Trail to Kirkwood Highway, cross onto Duncan Road, and follow it up to Milltown Road. You spend only a short stretch on Kirkwood Highway and skip the Prices Corner junction completely.

Are you near Greenbank Mill and the Wilmington & Western Railroad?

Yes. Greenbank Mill is under half a mile east of the office on Greenbank Road, and the railroad’s Greenbank Station is on Newport Gap Pike just south of us. If you know those landmarks, you already know roughly where we are.

Do you see whole families in one visit?

We do, and it is common with Marshallton households. Because the trip is short, parents often book consecutive appointments for several family members rather than making separate journeys.

Is parking available at the dental office?

Yes. Gawlas Family Dental has a free on-site parking lot for patients, including handicap-accessible parking.

Can I call the office for a dental emergency?

Yes. Call the office immediately if you are experiencing a dental emergency. We try to reserve room in our schedule for urgent needs and will make every reasonable effort to see you as soon as possible.

Does Gawlas Family Dental offer a membership plan?

Yes. The Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan helps qualifying patients without dental insurance receive included preventive care and save on additional eligible services. Contact the office for current pricing and complete plan terms.
