    Dentist Near Hockessin, DE

Gawlas Family Dental is a family-owned office at 25 Milltown Road in Wilmington, about ten minutes from Hockessin by way of Lancaster Pike and Newport Gap Pike. We treat children, adults, and seniors, and we handle preventive visits, restorative work, cosmetic treatment, and urgent problems under one roof.

The drive is unusually simple because Lancaster Pike and Newport Gap Pike are the same highway. Route 41 begins at the Pennsylvania line, runs through the middle of Hockessin, and continues roughly four and a half miles southeast to Milltown Road, where we sit a few hundred feet west of the intersection. For most of Hockessin, getting here means picking up Route 41 and staying on it.

Because Milltown Road meets Route 41 north of Kirkwood Highway, you turn off before you ever reach the Prices Corner light — the one piece of that corridor that actually slows people down.

An Independent Practice Ten Minutes From Hockessin

Gawlas Family Dental has served patients under its current ownership since 2021, when Dr. Matthew Gawlas purchased the practice from Dr. Todd Rowen. Dr. Rowen had already spent approximately 40 years caring for patients at this location, and nearly the entire team remained with the practice through the transition.

That continuity matters to patients who want to know the people providing their care. Dr. Gawlas has family ties to the area and is raising four children close to their grandparents.

Many of our patients want an independent dental practice where decisions about care are made by their dentist rather than a large corporate chain. Gawlas Family Dental is a member of the Independent Dental Society of Delaware, a group of independent dentists working to keep quality dental care accessible and affordable.

Hockessin households can keep hygiene visits, crowns and fillings, whitening, and a cracked tooth on a Tuesday afternoon all with the same team, instead of being referred out for each one.

Driving From Hockessin to 25 Milltown Road

    Gawlas Family Dental
    25 Milltown Road
    Wilmington, DE 19808

The main route — roughly ten minutes: follow Lancaster Pike southeast into the center of Hockessin. At the junction where Lancaster Pike continues east as Route 48, Route 41 bends south onto Newport Gap Pike. Stay with Route 41. About four and a half miles later, turn right onto Milltown Road; we are a short distance along, before you get as far as Brandywine Springs Park.

If you are on the Limestone Road side of town: from the Lantana Square area at Route 7 and Valley Road, it is easier to take Limestone Road south and turn left onto Milltown Road, then follow Milltown east. That version is two turns and never touches Newport Gap Pike.

A note on traffic: the worst congestion on this corridor is the Route 41 and Kirkwood Highway intersection at Prices Corner, and your turn onto Milltown Road comes before it. Milltown Road itself is busiest around school arrival and dismissal. Our hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

We have our own lot with free parking and handicap-accessible spaces.

Why Hockessin Patients Come to Us

Hockessin is not a place that lacks options. It has around 13,000 residents in the 19707 ZIP code, its own commercial center at Lantana Square where Route 7 meets Valley Road, the Hockessin Athletic Club, and community anchors that range from the Hockessin Friends Meetinghouse to the Hindu Temple of Delaware to the restored Hockessin Colored School #107, now a national historic site for its part in the Delaware case folded into Brown v. Board of Education. Nobody drives ten minutes out of Hockessin because they have to.

When we asked whether the practice welcomes patients from Hockessin and Newark, the answer was: “Absolutely! We love serving our next door neighbors.”

Two groups make up most of our Hockessin patients. One is families — parents whose children attend Cooke Elementary, North Star Elementary, or Henry B. duPont Middle School in the Red Clay district, who would rather book siblings back to back than split appointments across two offices. The other reflects Hockessin’s age profile: the median age there is close to fifty and roughly a quarter of residents are sixty-five or older, so we see a steady stream of adults dealing with older crowns, worn teeth, bridges that have outlived their fit, and the kind of long-horizon restorative planning that benefits from a dentist who is not going to hand the file to someone new next year.

Dental Care for Patients Without Insurance

Gawlas Family Dental offers the Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan for qualifying patients without dental insurance. The plan provides included preventive services and reduced fees on additional eligible care for an annual membership fee.

Smile 365 is a dental discount plan rather than insurance. There are no yearly maximums, deductibles, claim forms, preauthorizations, preexisting-condition limitations, or waiting periods. Please review current plan terms and eligibility with our office before enrolling.

We currently accept Aetna Extend, United Concordia, and Delaware Children’s Medicaid, along with all standard forms of payment. Because insurance participation can change, contact the office to confirm current acceptance and coverage before scheduling treatment.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take patients from Hockessin?

Yes. Asked directly about Hockessin and Newark patients, the practice’s answer was: “Absolutely! We love serving our next door neighbors.” Hockessin is one of the closest communities to the office.

How long is the drive from Hockessin, and what is the route?

About ten minutes. Take Lancaster Pike to where Route 41 turns onto Newport Gap Pike, stay on Route 41 for roughly four and a half miles, then turn onto Milltown Road. It is essentially one road the whole way.

I live nearer Lantana Square and Route 7 — is there a shorter way?

Yes. From that side of Hockessin, Limestone Road south to Milltown Road is the more direct option, and it avoids Newport Gap Pike entirely. Both routes take a similar amount of time; pick whichever road you are already closest to.

Will I get stuck at Prices Corner coming from Hockessin?

You should not. Milltown Road meets Route 41 north of Kirkwood Highway, so a Hockessin approach turns off before reaching the Prices Corner intersection.

Is parking available at the dental office?

Yes. Gawlas Family Dental has a free on-site parking lot for patients, including handicap-accessible parking.

Can I call the office for a dental emergency?

Yes. Call the office immediately if you are experiencing a dental emergency. We try to reserve room in our schedule for urgent needs and will make every reasonable effort to see you as soon as possible.

Does Gawlas Family Dental offer a membership plan?

Yes. The Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan helps qualifying patients without dental insurance receive included preventive care and save on additional eligible services. Contact the office for current pricing and complete plan terms.
