Dentist Near Brookside, DE
Gawlas Family Dental is a family-owned office at 25 Milltown Road in Wilmington, roughly nine miles and about 22 minutes from Brookside. We handle general, cosmetic, restorative, preventive, and emergency dentistry for children, adults, and seniors.
We will be straightforward about the geography: we are not the closest dental office to Brookside. There are practices a few minutes from Marrows Road. The people who drive up from Brookside to see us have usually decided to, for a reason they could name — a parent or a sibling already sits in our chairs, or they wanted an independently owned practice instead of a corporate group, or the trip up Route 7 is one they were already making.
If you decide that trade is worth making, a few things are worth knowing before you book. We keep room in the daily schedule for urgent problems, which matters more when the office is not around the corner. Parking is in our own lot, free, with handicap-accessible spaces. And our hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., so it helps to pick a slot that suits the drive rather than the other way around.
Why Brookside Patients Look for an Independent Office
Gawlas Family Dental has served patients under its current ownership since 2021, when Dr. Matthew Gawlas purchased the practice from Dr. Todd Rowen. Dr. Rowen had already spent approximately 40 years caring for patients at this location, and nearly the entire team remained with the practice through the transition.
That continuity matters to patients who want to know the people providing their care. Dr. Gawlas has family ties to the area and is raising four children close to their grandparents.
Many of our patients want an independent dental practice where decisions about care are made by their dentist rather than a large corporate chain. Gawlas Family Dental is a member of the Independent Dental Society of Delaware, a group of independent dentists working to keep quality dental care accessible and affordable.
Since patients from Brookside pass a good number of other options on the way here, we would rather cover cleanings, fillings, crowns, cosmetic treatment, and unexpected problems in one building than send you elsewhere for half of it.

Driving to Our Office From Brookside
Gawlas Family Dental
25 Milltown Road
Wilmington, DE 19808
The route most Brookside patients use: pick up Route 4 — Chestnut Hill Road, which becomes Ogletown-Stanton Road — and follow it northeast through Ogletown and Christiana to Stanton. Route 7 runs with Route 4 for a stretch there, then splits off north as Limestone Road. Stay on Limestone until it reaches Kirkwood Highway at Marshallton. Milltown Road runs off Kirkwood Highway at that point and continues northeast toward Route 41; our building is at the Route 41 end of it. The trip is a little under nine miles.
Going north through Newark instead: Route 72 leaves Brookside as South Chapel Street, passes through Newark as Library Avenue, and connects to Capitol Trail, which is simply the western name for Kirkwood Highway. It is about the same length and swaps the Route 4 corridor for Newark’s street grid. Patients coming from Newark proper usually take Route 72 further north instead, up Paper Mill Road to Limestone Road, a drive the practice measures at about 24 minutes.
When to come: the two slow spots are Route 4 near the Route 273 interchange and Kirkwood Highway between Marshallton and Prices Corner, and both are worst at commuting hours. A late-morning or early-afternoon appointment usually clears them. If the drive runs long anyway, call the office at 302-994-5887 rather than rushing.
Free on-site parking, including handicap-accessible spaces.
Who We See From Brookside
Brookside is a census-designated place of about 14,974 residents, according to the 2020 census, packed into just under four square miles southeast of Newark. That density shows up in how people find us. Word travels between neighbors and between relatives, and a fair number of our Brookside patients arrived because someone they know sent them.
The area falls in the Christina School District, with Brookside Elementary School on Marrows Road and Jennie E. Smith Elementary School serving zoned students, and the Delaware School for the Deaf located within Brookside itself. Households with school-age children make up a real share of who we treat from this direction, and they tend to book around the school calendar rather than around ours.
The other steady group is adults who live out this way and work closer to Wilmington. For them the office is not out of the way at all — it sits along a corridor they already drive. And across both groups, the common thread is a preference for a practice where the dentist, not a corporate owner, decides what care looks like.
Dental Care for Patients Without Insurance
Gawlas Family Dental offers the Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan for qualifying patients without dental insurance. The plan provides included preventive services and reduced fees on additional eligible care for an annual membership fee.
Smile 365 is a dental discount plan rather than insurance. There are no yearly maximums, deductibles, claim forms, preauthorizations, preexisting-condition limitations, or waiting periods. Please review current plan terms and eligibility with our office before enrolling.
We currently accept Aetna Extend, United Concordia, and Delaware Children’s Medicaid, along with all standard forms of payment. Because insurance participation can change, contact the office to confirm current acceptance and coverage before scheduling treatment.
