    Dentist Near Ogletown, DE

Ogletown has been a crossroads since the 1730s, when Thomas Ogle settled at the meeting of what are now Route 273 and Route 4. Gawlas Family Dental sits about seven miles up from that junction, at 25 Milltown Road in Wilmington — a drive of roughly 19 minutes.

The practice is family-owned and treats patients of every age: cleanings and exams, fillings and crowns, cosmetic treatment, and dental emergencies. Hours run Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with free parking in our own lot and handicap-accessible spaces.

Nothing about the trip involves downtown Wilmington. Ogletown’s whole character is highways, and the useful consequence is that reaching us is one continuous run north on Route 7 with a short turn east at the end. Still, we would not tell you we are your nearest option. Patients who come to us from the Ogletown side of the county have generally picked us on purpose.

What Ogletown Patients Tell Us They Are Looking For

Gawlas Family Dental has served patients under its current ownership since 2021, when Dr. Matthew Gawlas purchased the practice from Dr. Todd Rowen. Dr. Rowen had already spent approximately 40 years caring for patients at this location, and nearly the entire team remained with the practice through the transition.

That continuity matters to patients who want to know the people providing their care. Dr. Gawlas has family ties to the area and is raising four children close to their grandparents.

Many of our patients want an independent dental practice where decisions about care are made by their dentist rather than a large corporate chain. Gawlas Family Dental is a member of the Independent Dental Society of Delaware, a group of independent dentists working to keep quality dental care accessible and affordable.

One office, one set of records, one team — worth something when the tooth that cracks on a Sunday is twenty minutes from your dentist rather than two.

Getting Here From the Ogletown Crossroads

    Gawlas Family Dental
    25 Milltown Road
    Wilmington, DE 19808

Straight up Route 7. From the Route 4 and Route 273 interchange, follow Route 4 northeast as Ogletown-Stanton Road, past Christiana and on toward Stanton. Route 7 joins Route 4 for a short overlap there, then breaks away to the north as Limestone Road. Stay with Limestone as far as Kirkwood Highway in Marshallton, turn east, and Milltown Road carries you the rest of the way up to Route 41. We are near that end. Around seven miles door to door.

The Newport way around. Route 4 does not stop at Stanton; it continues as West Newport Pike into Newport, where it meets Route 141. Take 141 north from there to the Kirkwood Highway interchange at Prices Corner and come off westbound. It is a longer line on the map but it swaps Limestone Road’s traffic lights for a divided highway, which some days is the better bargain.

Timing. The section of Kirkwood Highway between Marshallton and Prices Corner is the piece that slows down, and it does it twice a day. Mid-morning through early afternoon generally sits between the two peaks.

Parking is on site and free, including handicap-accessible spaces. Questions about the route before your first visit? Call 302-994-5887.

    Patients From the Ogletown Area

Ogletown lies about three miles east of Newark, and by the late nineteenth century it was still a small village of a store, a post office, and a handful of houses. Highway construction and suburban growth eventually absorbed most of that. The Delaware Public Archives approved a historical marker in 2022 recognizing Thomas Ogle, who died in 1771, which tells you something about how much of the original place survives above ground.

What is there now is a corridor: Route 4 and Route 273 crossing at the center, Salem Church Road running south from the intersection as it has since 1827, Christiana High School on Salem Church Road, and the ChristianaCare hospital campus on Ogletown-Stanton Road a short way east. It is an area where people are accustomed to driving to whatever they need.

That habit shapes who we see from here. Some are adults whose workday already carries them toward Wilmington, and who would rather keep dental appointments near the commute than near the house. Some are families where one member came first and the rest followed. Some are patients who simply did not want their dentistry owned by a chain, and were willing to add fifteen minutes to find an alternative.

Dental Care for Patients Without Insurance

Gawlas Family Dental offers the Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan for qualifying patients without dental insurance. The plan provides included preventive services and reduced fees on additional eligible care for an annual membership fee.

Smile 365 is a dental discount plan rather than insurance. There are no yearly maximums, deductibles, claim forms, preauthorizations, preexisting-condition limitations, or waiting periods. Please review current plan terms and eligibility with our office before enrolling.

We currently accept Aetna Extend, United Concordia, and Delaware Children’s Medicaid, along with all standard forms of payment. Because insurance participation can change, contact the office to confirm current acceptance and coverage before scheduling treatment.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Ogletown?

Around 19 minutes, covering roughly seven miles, though the Kirkwood Highway stretch can add to that at rush hour. Our address is 25 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Do I have to go through Newark or into Wilmington?

Neither. The route runs the other way — northeast on Route 4 to Stanton, then north on Route 7 and east on Kirkwood Highway. Newark stays behind you and downtown Wilmington is several miles east of us.

Why drive here when Newark and Christiana are closer?

Honestly, for most people the answer is the practice rather than the pin on the map. This has been the same office at the same address for about forty years across two owners, it is independently owned, and nearly the whole team stayed on through the 2021 change in ownership. If none of that matters to you, a closer office is a perfectly sensible choice.

Is parking available at the dental office?

Yes. Gawlas Family Dental has a free on-site parking lot for patients, including handicap-accessible parking.

Can I call the office for a dental emergency?

Yes. Call the office immediately if you are experiencing a dental emergency. We try to reserve room in our schedule for urgent needs and will make every reasonable effort to see you as soon as possible.

Does Gawlas Family Dental offer a membership plan?

Yes. The Smile 365 Dental Discount Plan helps qualifying patients without dental insurance receive included preventive care and save on additional eligible services. Contact the office for current pricing and complete plan terms.
